how do you change the battery in a digital home thermomstat?

the display screen says "low battery" but I don't know where you put the battery

You have to take the cover off, and the battery will be underneath.

    If you have the manual, find the instructions there. If you don't have the manual, you might find it in the internet… go to the site of the manufacturer and locate the manual -> then the instructions on changing batteries. Else, if you are handy, open up the thermostat and locate then replace battery with the same size battery, both in physical size, and in voltage.

    If you are not handy, ask for help from a friend or call an electrician…
